Officers stationed at a security checkpoint near the White House responded to gunfire on Saturday evening after a man reportedly approached the area and opened fire, according to a law enforcement official.

The incident happened at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspect was shot by officers and later taken to George Washington Hospital for treatment, the official said.

Authorities identified the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been issued a stay-away order.

The official did not disclose the suspect’s condition or further details on how officers subdued him.Earlier, the United States Secret Service confirmed it was investigating the shooting, while Kash Patel said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was assisting with the investigation.
