Apple announced a major AI upgrade to Siri called “Siri AI,” introducing a smarter, more conversational assistant with web access, screen awareness, and new privacy-focused features across Apple devices.

New “Siri AI” Assistant

Apple has announced a major AI upgrade to Siri, introducing a revamped system called “Siri AI” during its Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. The update includes improved voice recognition, a more conversational tone, and a new standalone app.

Siri AI can now analyze what is on a device’s screen and has what Apple describes as “broad world knowledge,” allowing it to search the web for additional information when needed. It can also recall past conversations and retrieve specific details, such as a contact’s address from messages, even if it was never saved.

Apple software chief Craig Federighi said that truly useful AI must be centered on users’ needs, deeply integrated into Apple products, and built with privacy in mind.

Apple’s Position in the AI Race

Apple’s Siri upgrade has been one of the key focuses of this year’s conference, following delays since its initial announcement in 2024. The company has been seen as lagging behind competitors like Microsoft and Google, which have already advanced their AI systems.

Meanwhile, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini have gained popularity, putting pressure on Apple to modernize Siri, which was the first widely used voice assistant when it launched in 2011.

Features of Siri AI

Apple said the new Siri will:

  • Offer a more expressive and conversational voice experience
  • Be available on iPhones and iPads, with work ongoing for Apple Watch support
  • Include a standalone app that stores images and search history across devices using Apple’s private cloud system
  • Launch first in English, with more languages coming later

However, the rollout will not be immediate in the EU on iPhones and iPads, and will not be available in China due to regulatory issues.

Software and System Updates

Apple also confirmed that:

  • The latest iOS version will support devices back to iPhone 11
  • The next macOS version will be called “Golden Gate”
  • Siri AI will be integrated across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and other Apple platforms

Child Safety and Parental Controls

New safety features were also introduced, including:

  • Default restrictions allowing children access only to approved apps
  • An “ask to browse” feature requiring parental permission for new websites
  • Automatic blurring of graphic content in messaging apps, with parental alerts
  • Collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics to guide parents on healthy digital habits

Apple’s AI Strategy and Competition

Apple has traditionally taken a cautious approach to AI, often relying on partnerships such as Google’s Gemini models to enhance capabilities.

This contrasts with competitors like Microsoft, which are investing heavily in AI agents designed to replace traditional software functions. Nvidia is also working on AI-focused hardware that competes directly with Apple’s MacBooks.

Apple executives emphasized that AI is powerful but must be developed carefully and responsibly, focusing on user benefit rather than speed alone.

Spending and Future Direction

Apple has so far avoided the massive data center spending seen among rivals, but may now be shifting strategy. Its finance leadership has suggested increased investment in AI development, signaling a possible change in direction.

Unlike competitors, Apple benefits from its existing ecosystem—its devices already contain powerful chips capable of running AI features locally, alongside access to vast amounts of user data stored on iPhones.
