2026 Imbalu Season Officially Launched as Traditional Ritual Briefly Interrupts Official Ceremony

Thousands of people from Bugisu and neighbouring Kenya gathered at the Bumutoto Cultural Grounds on Saturday for the official launch of the 2026 Imbalu season, celebrating the Bagisu’s revered traditional circumcision rite in a colourful ceremony that was briefly interrupted by a clash between cultural customs and the official programme.

Imbalu is the Bagisu’s traditional initiation ceremony in which adolescent boys undergo public circumcision as they transition from boyhood to manhood. Performed without anaesthesia in line with tradition, the rite is regarded as a test of courage, endurance and readiness to take on adult responsibilities while symbolising maturity, identity and acceptance into the community.

The celebrations opened with vibrant performances by cultural troupes showcasing traditional circumcision dances, songs and drumming as thousands of spectators gathered to witness the start of one of Bugisu’s most significant cultural events.

The ceremony attracted cultural leaders, government officials, politicians and visitors from across Uganda and Kenya, highlighting the long-standing historical and cultural ties shared by the Bamasaba communities on both sides of Mount Elgon.

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth represented President Museveni and the Government of Uganda, while Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ababu Namwamba, represented President William Ruto.

Hundreds of Bamasaba from Kenya, led by Martin Soita Walyaula, also attended the celebrations, reaffirming the cross-border cultural bonds that continue to unite the community despite national boundaries.

The event also showcased culture as a tool for strengthening regional integration within the East African Community, where many communities share common ancestry, languages and traditions.

Bugisu Parliamentary Group Chairperson Godfrey Wakooli Matembu used the occasion to call on the government to invest in the Bumutoto Cultural Grounds, saying improved infrastructure would enhance cultural tourism and preserve the historic site.

“Mr Speaker, we intend to bring a motion to the House so that you can allow us to pass it to enable us to gazette this place as a cultural site,” Matembu said.

The celebrations, however, were briefly disrupted when the official programme coincided with an important traditional ritual.

As Oboth-Oboth prepared to deliver President Museveni’s message, a customary procession of circumcision candidates entered the arena, accompanied by traditional songs, dancing and chanting.

The procession continued in accordance with tradition, making it impossible for the Speaker to address the gathering.

As the crowd became increasingly animated, security personnel escorted him away from the podium before the President’s speech could be delivered.

Cultural leaders said the disruption was caused by a scheduling conflict between the official programme and traditional activities.

“By 3pm, candidates are supposed to proceed for circumcision, and culturally you cannot stop a candidate who is heading for the knife,” said Namisindwa District Chairperson Ema Bwayo.

Some stakeholders also blamed poor time management, alleging that Members of Parliament delayed the programme after holding a closed-door meeting with the Speaker at a hotel before proceeding to the cultural grounds.

Despite the interruption, the ceremony quickly resumed its traditional programme, with five boys undergoing circumcision at the Bumutoto Cultural Courtyard to officially usher in the 2026 Imbalu season.

The launch marks the beginning of months of initiation ceremonies across Bugisu, where thousands of young men are expected to undergo the traditional rite of passage.

The annual event is also expected to boost tourism and strengthen cultural exchanges between Uganda and Kenya while showcasing their shared heritage as a driver of regional cooperation within the East African Community.
