After stumbling dangerously close to the finish line, Vipers SC finally summoned one decisive push to brush aside Maroons FC 3-0 at Wankulukuku yesterday and officially clinch the Uganda Premier League title.

On an evening when title rivals KCCA FC were held to a frustrating goalless draw by URA FC at Nakivubo, the Venoms completed what had looked inevitable for months — an eighth league crown built on resilience, defensive solidity, and an unmatched ability to grind out results even when performances were far from convincing.

The triumph leaves Vipers on 64 points from 29 matches, having registered 18 wins, 10 draws, and no defeat on the pitch all season. They have scored 53 goals while conceding only 17, giving them a commanding goal difference of +36.

In contrast, KCCA’s spirited but inconsistent challenge leaves them on 59 points, with six defeats and a far weaker goal difference of +21.As a result, Vipers’ final fixture against Express FC and KCCA’s clash with Mbarara City FC on Friday will now serve only as formalities rather than decisive title encounters.

Ironically, the coronation arrived during one of Vipers’ toughest periods of the campaign. The Venoms had gone four league games without victory, while pressure intensified following their painful Uganda Cup exit.

That tension was visible on club president Lawrence Mulindwa, who nervously followed proceedings at Wankulukuku before eventually relaxing as the title mission was finally accomplished.

Early breakthrough and controversy

Vipers wasted no time asserting themselves as Yunus Sentamu bundled home from close range inside the opening minute.Maroons, however, felt hard done by after Marvin Oshaba appeared to score when his effort struck the underside of the crossbar and looked to have crossed the line. Neither referee Felix Nuwagaba nor assistant referee Jane Mutonyi awarded the goal.

Oshaba again thought he had levelled at the stroke of halftime when his shot bounced off the underside of the crossbar twice before a desperate clearance attempt from Vipers defender Kevin DaSylva Bady. But officials remained unmoved and instead awarded a goal kick.

Moments later, the contest was effectively settled as Usama Arafat doubled Vipers’ lead with a deflected effort that flew in off the crossbar.

The crowning moment fittingly belonged to Karim Watambala, whose brilliantly worked third goal — created through slick passing before being emphatically finished — perfectly captured the fighting spirit that has defined Vipers’ march to an eighth league title.

Even without consistently producing dazzling football, the Venoms have transformed into a ruthless machine capable of suffocating opponents through tactical discipline and efficiency. For now, celebrations await after Friday’s meeting with Express. Yet beneath the joy remains the uncomfortable feeling that the overall competitiveness of the league still falls short of the expected standard.

At the bottom of the table, Buhimba United Saints FC appear destined for relegation with just 15 points, while Calvary FC remain in deep trouble on 18 points after a goalless draw with UPDF FC at Bombo
