Peruth Chemutai Wins Commonwealth Bronze as Uganda’s Medal Tally Grows

Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai has added another international medal to her remarkable career after winning bronze in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Chemutai crossed the finish line in 9:09.96 to claim third place behind Kenya’s Faith Cherotich, who won gold in a Games record time of 9:01.76, and England’s Elise Thorner, who took silver with a personal best of 9:05.45.

The bronze medal became Uganda’s third podium finish at the Games, coming shortly after the Gazelles secured silver in the women’s 3×3 basketball final.

It also adds to Chemutai’s impressive list of achievements, further cementing her place among the world’s top steeplechase athletes.

The Ugandan star made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, becoming the country’s first woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She later claimed silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she set a national record of 8:48.03.

Chemutai is also a proven performer at the Commonwealth Games. She won bronze at Birmingham 2022 after recovering from a dramatic fall during the race to finish on the podium.

Her latest bronze medal in Glasgow further demonstrates her consistency on the international stage while boosting Uganda’s medal tally at the ongoing Games.

With Husnah Kukundakwe’s silver in para-swimming, the Gazelles’ silver in women’s 3×3 basketball, and Chemutai’s bronze, Uganda has continued to register impressive performances across multiple disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
