Pro-coup ruling alliance wins majority in Guinea’s legislative elections, strengthening the president’s grip on power amid opposition exclusion. Political parties supporting Guinea’s coup leader–turned-President Mamady Doumbouya have secured a majority in the country’s legislative elections, according to the electoral authority, strengthening his hold on power in the bauxite-rich West African nation. Preliminary results show that the final allocation of Guinea’s 147 parliamentary seats is still being finalized, but the pro-Doumbouya Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD) coalition is significantly ahead of rival groups. GMD and its allies have already won at least 100 seats, based on the announced figures. The results are expected to further reinforce Doumbouya’s political position. The former special forces commander took power in 2021 and later won a seven-year presidential term in December, a result that opposition figures have disputed. Voter turnout was recorded at 52.87% for the legislative elections and 58.51% for simultaneous local government polls. Aminata Touré, the country’s chief electoral official, said parties have eight days to contest individual results, with disputes to be handled by judicial bodies before final confirmation is made. The vote took place without participation from major opposition parties. Groups linked to former President Alpha Condé and opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Touré were excluded after being dissolved. Diallo, currently in exile, earlier called for “direct resistance” following the crackdown on opposition parties. Authorities said the parties were dissolved for failing to meet legal requirements, including financial reporting obligations.
