Ugandan football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Sports Club Villa captain David Owori, who succumbed to severe injuries on Wednesday morning after being violently attacked by unidentified assailants near his home in Makindye, Kampala. The 27-year-old utility player died at Case Clinic in Kampala, where he had been receiving treatment after the Tuesday night attack. Owori was initially rushed to the hospital while still conscious by his close friend and former SC Villa teammate, Nicholas Kabonge, but his condition later worsened. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our captain, David Owori, who had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic following an attack by suspected thugs,” SC Villa said in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace, Captain.” SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori was attacked at about 8:00 p.m. as he approached his residence, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the hospital. Owori’s death has renewed concerns over rising urban crime in Kampala and surrounding areas, where athletes, public figures, and ordinary citizens have increasingly become victims of violent attacks. The incident has also sparked fresh calls for improved security for sports personalities, many of whom live in residential neighborhoods without personal security protection.
