Outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has announced that she will not contest for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament. In a statement released on Sunday, Among said the decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection” aimed at maintaining unity and clarity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). She thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM leadership, Members of Parliament, her family, and friends for supporting her during her tenure as Deputy Speaker and later Speaker of Parliament. Among also pledged full support to candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the party for the Speakership race and called upon MPs-elect of the 12th Parliament to rally behind the party’s choice. She further stated that she will continue cooperating with ongoing state investigations into allegations that have recently been raised against her, adding that she remains available to serve the country in any capacity assigned by the President and the party.
