The National Resistance Movement has summoned all its Members of Parliament and allied independents to State House Entebbe on Sunday to endorse candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker ahead of Monday’s parliamentary elections. Uganda’s 12th Parliament is expected to convene for the first time on May 25 to elect its presiding officers. Flavian Zeija will oversee the election of the Speaker, after which the newly elected Speaker will preside over the vote for Deputy Speaker. Before that process, the NRM Parliamentary Caucus will hold a meeting on May 24 at 2:00pm at State House Entebbe. The party’s Secretary General, Richard Todwong, issued the official notice to all legislators. “Notice is hereby given for the first meeting of the National Resistance Movement Parliamentary Caucus, which has been scheduled to take place on Sunday, 24th May, 2026 at State House, Entebbe, starting at 2:00pm prompt,” Todwong wrote. The Patriotic League of Uganda, a pressure group affiliated with the NRM and led by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has already endorsed Jacob Oboth-Oboth for Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker. Oboth-Oboth, the former Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs and an intellectual property expert, represents West Budama County South. Tayebwa, who served as Deputy Speaker in the 11th Parliament, represents Ruhinda North in Mitooma District. The State House meeting comes amid heightened political tension following a fallout between former Speaker Anita Among and President Yoweri Museveni. Following corruption allegations, Museveni reportedly directed a joint investigation supervised by Gen. Muhoozi, who also leads the PLU. Among has since withdrawn from the Speaker race and remained largely out of the public eye as investigations continue. Security agencies have searched her residences in Kampala and surrounding suburbs, reportedly seizing property linked to investigations into alleged corruption and illicit enrichment. Before stepping aside, Among had publicly stated that she intended to seek a second and final term before eventually handing over leadership to Tayebwa, her former deputy. Tayebwa now appears to have the backing of Museveni’s son in his bid to retain the deputy speakership. The ruling party has also extended invitations to independent MPs interested in cooperating with the NRM. The 12th Parliament consists of 529 MPs, including 372 from the NRM and 68 independents, many of whom are former NRM members who lost during party primaries. “By copy of this notice, all independent Members of Parliament who have expressed interest in cooperating with the National Resistance Movement are invited to attend. I take this opportunity to formally congratulate each of you upon your swearing in as members of the 12th Parliament of Uganda and members of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus,” Todwong said.
