Anita Among Sends Congratulatory Message to New Parliamentary Leaders

A congratulatory message posted on X by Speaker Anita Annet Among has sparked public discussion after she praised newly elected Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa despite her reported absence from the first sitting of the 12th Parliament held at Kololo Independence Grounds.

In the post, Among said she joined her colleagues in congratulating the two leaders, expressing confidence that their leadership would “bolster the legislative agenda and promote outcomes that serve the nation’s best interests.” She also wished them success in their service to Uganda.

The message comes after the inaugural parliamentary sitting where Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa were elected to lead the 12th Parliament, a key ceremony that attracted top political leaders and lawmakers.

However, observers noted that Among did not appear at the historic session, raising questions among political commentators and social media users about her absence during the event where leadership transitions were formally concluded.

Neither the Speaker nor Parliament had issued an official explanation for her absence at the time of publication.

The development has added fresh attention to the opening of the 12th Parliament, which marked the beginning of a new legislative term under new leadership at the helm of Uganda’s Parliament.
