Summary Parliament has approved Vice President Jessica Alupo for a historic second consecutive term after she secured overwhelming support in a vote of 325 MPs, with opposition members raising concerns about performance-based justification for reappointment. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has also been retained for a second term after winning strong parliamentary backing, with leaders highlighting her coordination of government business and high performance rates across legislative and oversight duties. Uganda has discharged one Ebola patient after successful treatment, health officials said on Tuesday, as the country continues to respond to the latest outbreak of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus strain, which has so far recorded seven confirmed cases. The patient, described as the second confirmed case in the current outbreak, tested negative twice before being released from isolation, according to the Ministry of Health. “The second case, a lady who was admitted to our isolation centre, has now been discharged after testing negative for Ebola twice, which means she is now free from Ebola,” said Charles Olaro, Uganda’s Director General of Health Services. Uganda’s first confirmed patient, who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo seeking treatment, died in Kampala earlier this month. According to the World Health Organization, Ebola patients are only discharged after two negative blood tests taken at least 48 hours apart. Health officials say four patients are still under treatment, while more than 100 contacts are under quarantine in hotels and other facilities for monitoring. Dr. Olaro noted that treatment options for the current strain remain limited. “Particularly for this Bundibugyo Ebola virus, there are no vaccines and no specific therapeutics,” he said. He added, “Most treatment is supportive. If patients are identified early and supportive care is started promptly, the chances of survival are much higher.” Uganda has intensified surveillance and containment measures amid concerns over cross-border transmission linked to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where health systems remain strained. Previous outbreaks of the Bundibugyo strain in Uganda and DR Congo recorded fatality rates between 30% and 50%. During Uganda’s 2025 Sudan strain outbreak, 10 patients recovered after receiving supportive care. The outbreak recorded 14 cases and four deaths, according to Ministry of Health data. Health authorities remain on high alert as Uganda strengthens screening, contact tracing, and quarantine measures to prevent further spread of the virus.
