Summary Parliament has approved Vice President Jessica Alupo for a historic second consecutive term after she secured overwhelming support in a vote of 325 MPs, with opposition members raising concerns about performance-based justification for reappointment. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has also been retained for a second term after winning strong parliamentary backing, with leaders highlighting her coordination of government business and high performance rates across legislative and oversight duties. Uganda has announced a series of strict measures following a continued escalation of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and increased risk of cross-border transmission. The National Task Force on Ebola Response, chaired by the Vice President, agreed on the new resolutions on May 27, 2026, aimed at preventing the spread of the virus into the country. Among the key decisions, Uganda has temporarily closed its border with the DRC, allowing entry and exit only for authorized Ebola response teams, humanitarian operations, essential food and cargo transport, and security personnel under strict health screening. All approved travellers will undergo mandatory screening, complete locator forms, and be placed under continuous monitoring at entry points in line with Ministry of Health protocols. In addition, anyone entering from the DRC will be required to observe a 21-day self-isolation period under health supervision. Schools in border districts will remain open but are required to strictly follow health guidelines. Authorities must identify learners who recently returned from the DRC and monitor their temperature daily for 21 days, with designated health facilities prepared to handle any suspected cases. Local leaders, including Resident District Commissioners and City Commissioners, have been directed to enforce all Ebola prevention measures, while media houses will be required to dedicate at least 30 minutes of daily prime-time programming to public awareness on Ebola prevention and detection. The government says the measures are part of efforts to contain the outbreak and protect public health amid rising regional risks.
