More than 400 people were arrested across France after violent clashes erupted during celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph over Arsenal. More than 400 people were arrested across France after clashes erupted between football fans and police following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League final victory over Arsenal. Thousands of security officers had been deployed to prevent disorder, but unrest still disrupted bus, train and rail services in Paris. Fireworks and flares were set off, several police officers were injured, and officers used tear gas to disperse crowds in the city centre. Authorities had strengthened security measures after last year’s celebrations turned deadly. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said a “very robust and solid” security operation had been put in place. Large crowds gathered along the Champs-Élysées after PSG secured victory in a penalty shootout. Videos from the capital showed flares being lit, electric bikes set on fire, and at least one shopfront vandalised. Earlier, police also clashed with supporters watching the match on giant screens at Parc des Princes. Police reported that six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter were damaged during the disturbances. By early Sunday, authorities had arrested 416 people, including 280 in Paris. Nuñez said seven police officers were injured and described the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.” Meanwhile, far-right leader Marine Le Pen criticised the unrest on social media, saying it was unacceptable for a football victory to be accompanied by violence. PSG players are expected to take part in a victory parade on Sunday, including celebrations at the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower, followed by a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
