Late Merino Strike Sends Spain Through, Ends Portugal’s World Cup Dream

Spain scored a dramatic late winner to eliminate Portugal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that could also mark the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable international career.

Mikel Merino struck in the 91st minute to send Spain into the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Monday’s Round of 16 clash between the USA and Belgium. His goal settled a tense encounter after both sides struggled to produce the attacking display many had expected.

Spain created several promising chances in the first half. Mikel Oyarzabal missed the best opportunity after finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, while Portugal came closest through Nuno Mendes, whose deflected effort crashed against the crossbar after beating Unai Simón.

Lamine Yamal also threatened for Spain, but neither side managed to find the breakthrough before halftime.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain enjoying more possession and creating the better chances, although clear-cut opportunities remained limited.

Portugal finally tested Simón in the 76th minute when Bruno Fernandes fired narrowly wide of the near post.

As the match approached stoppage time, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez introduced fresh players but kept 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo on the field, despite his reduced impact in recent years.

The decisive moment came in the 91st minute when Rodri played Ferran Torres through the defence. Torres then squared the ball to an unmarked Merino, who calmly finished past Diogo Costa to score the game’s only goal.

Portugal nearly forced extra time in the closing moments, but Bernardo Silva’s header flew just over the crossbar.

The defeat ends Ronaldo’s sixth FIFA World Cup campaign with Portugal and is widely expected to be his final appearance at the tournament. The legendary forward was visibly emotional after the final whistle, applauding the Portuguese supporters with tears in his eyes.
