Museveni Presents Olara Otunnu’s Candidature for UN Secretary-General to Security Council Members

President Yoweri Museveni has presented Ambassador Olara Otunnu as Uganda’s candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, urging members of the UN Security Council to support his bid.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, Museveni said he met ambassadors representing members of the United Nations Security Council at State House Entebbe, where he formally introduced Otunnu’s candidature.

The President asked the ambassadors to convey Uganda’s endorsement of Otunnu’s nomination to their respective governments.

Museveni described Otunnu as a candidate with the experience, integrity and diplomatic credentials required to lead the United Nations.

“Ambassador Otunnu has the experience, integrity, and diplomatic credentials to lead the UN,” Museveni said.

He added that Uganda’s history of promoting regional peace and security, as well as its role in hosting refugees, reflects the values behind the country’s support for Otunnu’s candidature.

Ambassador Olara Otunnu, a former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, is Uganda’s nominee in the race to succeed the current UN Secretary-General.
