The Office of the Clerk to Parliament has scheduled May 25, 2026, as the date when newly sworn-in Members of Parliament will elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to lead the House for the next five years.

In an announcement delivered by Mr Peter Odeke from the Clerk’s office at Parliament, it was stated that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be the first business conducted by the 12th Parliament.

“After the swearing-in of Members of Parliament, the first business on May 25 will be the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” Mr Odeke said on Wednesday during the first half-day break of the swearing-in ceremony at Parliament.

By 11:40am, when Parliament adjourned for the lunch break, at least 95 incoming Members of Parliament had taken the oath. Among them was Bukedea Woman MP Ms Anita Annet Among, who has in recent weeks been seeking to retain the Speakership position she assumed after replacing the late Jacob Oulanyah, who died on March 20, 2022.

Those who have expressed interest in challenging Ms Among for the Speakership include Laroo-Pece MP-elect Mr Norbert Mao, Mbale City Woman MP-elect Ms Lydia Wanyoto, and Bukono County MP Persis Namuganza.

On Tuesday, President Museveni’s son and Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), withdrew the movement’s earlier endorsement of incumbent Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa for the same positions in the 12th Parliament.
