Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has called on the club’s leadership to make bold, smart and swift decisions after the Gunners lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday.

The defeat marked Arsenal’s second loss in a Champions League final. However, the club can take pride in ending a 22-year wait for the English league title this season.

Arsenal made a dream start in Budapest, taking the lead through Kai Havertz in the sixth minute. PSG responded with an Ousmane Dembele penalty before winning the match in a dramatic shootout after extra time.

A disappointed Arteta said Arsenal must now make key decisions if they are to establish themselves as a dominant force in England and Europe.

“First of all, I will spend a few days with my family, then we will begin reviewing everything we have done,” Arteta said. “If we want to reach the next level, we must show ambition. We have the quality, but it requires being ambitious, quick and smart.”

PSG controlled most of the game, enjoying 72% possession compared to Arsenal’s 28%. Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel and William Saliba, delivered a strong performance, but Gabriel’s missed penalty proved costly.

Arteta also felt his side could have been awarded a penalty when Noni Madueke went down in the box during extra time, though he refused to blame the result on that incident.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said the final was decided by fine margins, especially in a penalty shootout, and stressed that the team must learn from the disappointment and move forward.
