Mexico launched their World Cup campaign in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over nine-man South Africa as the tournament got underway at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the World Cup on Thursday before experienced striker Raul Jimenez added a second, giving the co-hosts a perfect start in Group A. South Africa struggled to make an impact throughout the match and ended the game with only nine players after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off.

The celebrations had barely begun when Quinones put Mexico ahead in the ninth minute, firing a low shot through the legs of South African captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The goal sparked a thunderous reaction from the packed crowd inside the Estadio Azteca, the first stadium in history to host matches at three different FIFA World Cups.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos had warned his side about the intimidating atmosphere, but his players appeared overwhelmed by the occasion as Mexico dominated possession and drew loud “Ole!” chants from their supporters.

Sithole endured a difficult afternoon and was shown a red card in the 49th minute after bringing down Brian Gutierrez when the Mexican attacker was through on goal.

Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute following a swift counterattack. Roberto Alvarado delivered a precise cross that Jimenez headed home at the far post.

South Africa’s problems deepened in the 84th minute when Zwane was sent off after a VAR review determined he had struck Alvarado in the face with his arm.

Mexico were also reduced to 10 men late on when defender Cesar Montes received a red card for a reckless challenge on Khuliso Mudau just outside the penalty area.

Despite the late dismissal, Mexico comfortably secured all three points to make an ideal start to their World Cup journey.
