Police Detain 3 Over Death of Rugby Player in Alleged Mob Attack

Police at Kira Road Police Station are holding three individuals in connection with the death of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, following an incident that took place on 5 June 2026.

The suspects have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet.

Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased was allegedly attacked by members of the public who accused him of stealing a woman’s handbag. However, the exact circumstances leading to the incident are still under active investigation.

Police responded to the scene and rushed the victim to Mulago National Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention. He later passed away on the same day at around 7:00 p.m.

The three suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Police have strongly condemned acts of mob justice, urging the public to always report suspected offenders to authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands, warning that such actions can lead to the loss of innocent lives.
